Summer Cheese Series - The Art of Gouda: Five Cheeses, Five Pairings for the Perfect Charcuterie Experience

In a recent Charqute reel, my dear friend Ani Vartanian—a loan officer with a surprising flair for cheese tasting—joined me to explore the world of Gouda. What unfolded was part luxury tasting, part laughter, and fully Charqute: five distinct Goudas, each with its own character, paired with flavors that elevate them into an unforgettable grazing experience. Inspired by that moment, we’re bringing the conversation here—so you can savor the story behind each cheese and discover how to enjoy them the Charqute way.

Amanti Black Lemon Gouda

A cheese as striking visually as it is on the palate. Its citrus infusion adds brightness to creamy richness, creating a pairing that feels playful yet sophisticated. Ani likened it to being on vacation along the Amalfi Coast—a whimsical escape in every bite. Serve with candied citrus peel, pistachios, and a glass of Brut Champagne for a truly transportive experience.

Beemster XO (26-Month Aged)

Beemster, a historic Dutch cooperative founded in 1901, produces some of the world’s most revered Goudas. The XO, aged for 26 months, develops a crystalline texture with caramel and butterscotch depth. Ani joked she’d marry this cheese—it’s that captivating. Pair it with aged balsamic vinegar, toasted almonds, and a bold Cabernet Sauvignon for an indulgence that lingers.

Beemster Royaal Grand Cru (12-Month Aged)

Smoother and more balanced than its XO sibling, the Beemster Royaal Grand Cru is nutty with hints of sweetness. During our tasting, Ani described it as a cheese fit for a yacht and a private chef—a picture of refined leisure. It pairs beautifully with ripe pears, fig jam, and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc for effortless elegance.

Trader Joe’s Bacon Cheddar Gouda

Playful yet satisfying, this cheese is creamy, smoky, and delightfully unpredictable. Ani called it “chaotic” in the best sense—unexpected but irresistible. Pair it with apple butter, rye crisps, and even a bourbon cocktail for a bold twist on tradition.

Kirkland Signature Creamy Gouda

Luxury does not always demand rarity—it demands curation. Smooth and approachable, Kirkland’s Creamy Gouda is reliable in the best way. Ani quipped it was the kind of cheese that could water your plants while you’re out of town—dependable, comforting, and versatile. Elevated with Marcona almonds, wildflower honey, and a Chardonnay, it proves that even simplicity can be sophisticated.

Gouda, The Charqute Way

What unites these five Goudas is not sameness, but contrast. Together, they form a narrative of heritage and innovation, indulgence and accessibility. At Charqute, we honor the stories behind every artisan, every flavor, and every playful tasting moment. Whether it’s the centuries-old expertise of Beemster or the modern imagination of Amanti, each cheese tells a story worth savoring.

A well-composed cheese board is more than an arrangement of flavors—it’s an invitation to gather, laugh, and indulge in the details. That is the Charqute philosophy, and why our boards aren’t just eaten; they’re experienced.
